Yukon License Plates

Since 1990, Yukon licence plates are issued singly with no front plate requirement. Renewal date stickers not issued after March 2022.

Yukon is not a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP) and thus does not issue apportioned plates. Trucks and buses based elsewhere but using Yukon roads must also register their vehicles separately in Yukon, resulting in some interesting plate observations on those vehicles. Heavy Commercial and trailer plates commonly used in these cases plus the green Public Carrier permit until the 1990s.

Many thanks and appreciation to Richard Zral and Mark Bowers of the Yukon DMV for all of the updated information!

YTG stands for "Yukon Territorial Government", although this series is used only by the Department of Highways and Public Works.

Series started in 1991 at YTG 001 with no gold panner. After YTG 999 was reached, the series rolled over to Y1000 and continued from there, with the gold panner at the left.

Government, Territorial

Note: Yukon does not use the letters D, I, Q, U, or Y, except in the first position on Government, Dealer, and Bus plates, but they did issue the BBU passenger series for some reason.

Spacing changed between G47 519 and G48023.

The letter "G" indicates a Yukon Government vehicle. Used on all sorts of vehicles, including light trucks, cars, SUVs. The first two numbers, ie "47" denote vehicle type. The 47s are SUVs. The entire 5 digits are the numbers assigned to the particular vehicle for fleet identification.

These plates are grouped by vehicle type so brand new ones from G40 and G46 are also being issued.

Public Carrier

PUBLIC CARRIER 5 x 8" size white-on-green supplemental plate for commercial vehicles. "Yukon" in italic upper- and lower-case letters above legend in upper case block letters above number in small dies. Prior issues were fully embossed.

These were more common in the 1980s and '90s when they were still used on trucks. By the late-1990s these were mostly found on specific Greyhound buses licensed to operate into Yukon. With the 2018 demise of Greyhound Canada these plates are even less common.
